Abstract:
 The Southern Gerontological Society was established in 1978 as a network of gerontology professionals, educators, researchers, and policy makers in the southern United States. The records document the membership, leadership, meetings, finances, administrative operations, publications, and programs of the Southern Gerontological Society in addition to its interactions with other state, regional, and national organizations dedicated to the concerns of aging populations.

Historical Note

The Southern Gerontological Society (SGS) was established in 1978 as a network of gerontology professionals, educators, researchers, and policy makers in the southern United States. The organization has its roots in the Southern Conference on Gerontology (founded in 1951). On March 28, 1978, several professionals working in the Southern Conference met to develop a plan for the new regional society, which would be presented at the 28th annual meeting of the Southern Conference in May of 1979. At the March 28 meeting, committees were formed to further carry out the plan of organization. Tom Rich, from the University of Florida, chaired a Bylaws Committee; Lorin Baumhover, from the University of Alabama, chaired a Membership Committee; Barbara Payne, from Georgia State University, chaired a Meetings Committee; and Gordon Streib, from the University of Florida, chaired an Executive Committee. Further planning sessions in 1978 led to the first election of officers. Brabara Payne was elected as the first president; Priscella Perry, from the University of Miami, was the first Vice President; and Lorin Baumhover was the first Secretary and Treasurer.

SGS began publishing a regular newsletter (which would eventually be named the Southern Gerontologist) in 1979 and established its first annual meeting in 1980. The theme of the first annual meeting was "Aging in the South: Cooperation for Tomorrow," and drew participants from twenty states. In 1982, SGS began publishing a scholarly journal, the Journal of Applied Gerontology. Since its inception, SGS membership has grown to represent at least 30 states, Washington, D.C., and Canada.

Scope and Contents

The papers include materials relating to the organization, administration, finances, meetings, publications, conferences and programs of the Southern Gerontological Society. The Southern Gerontological Society organized an annual conference meeting (1980-present), published a newsletter (The Southern Gerontologist, 1979-present) and an academic journal (Journal of Applied Gerontology, 1982-present), and implemented numerous educational and training programs for gerontology professionals. The papers include documentation, correspondence, meeting minutes, contracts and grants, and other materials related to these programs and publications. Also included are correspondence and materials concerning the relationship between the Southern Gerontological Society and other organizations concerned with the issues of aging populations. The papers, however, are not comprehensive. The bulk of the materials are from the 1980s, but some materials from the 1970s, 1990s, and 2000s are also included.

Arrangement

This collection is arranged into six series: Organizational Documents and Meeting Minutes, Administrative Files, Correspondence, Conferences, Publications, and Related Conferences and Organizations. The Administrative Files series is arranged into five subseries: Leadership Records, Financial Records, Contracts and Grants, Committee Files, and Membership Records. Within each series and subseries, files are largely arranged chronologically.

This collection is open for use in the Dougherty Reading Room, located on the fourth floor of Belk Library.

Acquisitions Information

Records were donated by the Southern Gerontological Society in December 2011. The records were transferred from the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa where they were on loan.

Series Description

Series II: Administrative Files

 

Series Description

This series consists of administrative files, including leadership records, financial records, contracts and grants, committee files, and membership records. Subseries A: Leadership Records consists of lists of board and committee members, election ballots and bibliographies, some related correspondence, and other related files. Subseries B: Financial Records consists of proposed and approved operational budgets from 1981-1999, financial statements and reports from 1980-1995, and tax returns from 1980-1986. Subseries C: Contracts and Grants consists of agreements with subcontractors, grant documentation, and other related records and correspondence for individual subcontracts and grants. Subseries D: Committee Files consists of reports, meeting minutes, correspondence and other records of both standing and ad hoc committees. Subseries E: Membership Records consists of membership lists, mailing labels, membership applications, brochures, and related correspondence from 1979-1988. These records are not comprehensive. Subseries A, B, and E are largely arranged chronologically. Subseries C and D are arranged alphabetically and chronologically within individual folders. These records are not comprehesive. Files for a specific annual meeting may include some, but not all of the above. Not all annual meetings are represented. Also included are seventeen color photographs from the sixth annual meeting in Tampa, Florida on May 28-31, 1985. Files are largely arranged chronologically.
