Abstract:

The collection consists of videos of dances and concerts shot by William R. Turner, featuring Old-Time and Bluegrass music in North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. Performers include Doc Watson, Dry Branch Fire Squad, and the Lewis Family as well as noted regional string band musicians and groups including Larry Sigmon and Barbara Poole, the Whitetop Mountain Band, the Grayson Highlands String Band, Oldtime Tradition, and the Appalachian Mountain Girls.

Biographical/Historical Note

The collection contains videos shot by William R. Turner at locations featuring Old-Time and Bluegrass music. Turner attended dances and concerts in western North Carolina, eastern Tennessee, and southwestern Virginia filming at venues and events such as Slagle’s Pasture, East Park Fish Camp, Laurel Bloomery, Laurel Springs, the Whitetop Mountain Molasses Festival, Wayne Henderson Festival, and the Whitetop Mountain Ramp Festival. The tapes were stored in the private collection of William’s son, John W. Turner, a flatfoot dancer who also attended the events, until being donated in 2014.

Scope and Contents

The collection contains 189 video tapes from John W. Turner, recorded by William R. Turner, Jr. of concerts and dances at locations in North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.

Arrangement

The collection is arranged chronologically, the original order as received from John W. Turner in 2014. Recorded VHS are listed first followed by one commercial recording of Merlefest by North Carolina Public Broadcasting and 16 8mm video cassette tapes.

Access Restrictions

This collection is open for use in the Dougherty Reading Room. An appointment for research is recommended. The Dougherty Reading Room is located on the 4th floor of Belk Library in Special Collections.
