Abstract:

The collection consists of a photograph album marked “Shots, Vol. 5, P. H. T.,” belonging to Percy Hobart Titus. Photographs are black and white and document Mr. and Mrs. Titus’s 1927 travels in North and South Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, Maine, and New Hampshire; in Canada; and in the Caribbean. North Carolina pictures are of the mountain region, including Alleghany, Buncombe, Jackson, Rutherford, Watauga, and Wilkes Counties.

Biographical/Historical Note

Percy Hobart (P. H.) Titus was born on November 6, 1879 and died on November 8, 1948. He was educated at Colebrook (New Hampshire) Academy. From 1904-1917, he was Adjuster and then Chief Adjuster of the Boston Elevated Railway Company; beginning in 1917, he was General Claims Manager and then Vice President of Liberty Mutual Insurance Company. He was a Kentucky Colonel, a Mason (32 degree Shriner), and a member of the Massachusetts Society of the Sons of the American Revolution. Titus was married first to Maud Beatrice Bunnell (one daughter, Dorothy Madeleine Titus) and then to Elizabeth Walter Howland (one son, Bursley Howland Titus). He had homes in Weston and Oysterville, Massachusetts.

Scope and Contents

The P. H. Titus photograph collection contains black and white print photographs of various Caribbean locations, e.g., Barbados, Dominica, Guadeloupe, Montserrat, St. Lucia, St. Thomas, and Trinidad and Tobago. The collection also includes pictures from western North Carolina (Alleghany, Buncombe, Jackson, Rutherford, Watauga, and Wilkes Counties), South Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, Maine, New Hampshire, Canada, and his home in Massachusetts. Appalachian region photographs are of identified and unidentified people, landscapes, buildings, and activities. Pictures are identified individually in white ink.

This collection is open for use in the Dougherty Reading Room. An appointment for research is recommended. The Dougherty Reading Room is located on the 4th floor of Belk Library in Special Collections.
