Biographical/Historical Note

The Ulster people are an ethnic group found in Ireland. Their ancestors were mainly Scottish and migrated to Ireland in the 17th Century. Their relocation to Ireland was part of a plan by King James I to suppress rebellions among the native Irish with Protestant settlers from lowland Scotland and northern England.

When the Ulster immigrants migrated to North America, they brought their religion, tradition, and culture which influenced the people in the Appalachian area.

Scope and Contents

This single-item collection is one brochure entitled The Southern Appalachians and the Ulster Immigration written by Mary H. White, circa 1920. It describes the history of the Scotch-Irish people from Ireland's Ulster region to America in the 1600s.

This brochure was written and distributed as a means to collect funds via the Southern Industrial Educational Association of Washington DC for the "purpose of giving the boys and girls in the remote mountain sections [of Virginia and Appalachia] training suited to their local environment....carrying with them knowledge....." The Association was raising funds for industrial education of the children in the Southern Appalachian Mountains.
