Biographical/Historical Note

This editorial printed about the gubernatorial race between William A. Graham and Michael Hoke in 1844 has a focus on Orange County, North Carolina, residents and favors Hoke for governor. Alas, he did not win.

William Alexander Graham was North Carolina Governor between 1845 and 1849. In addition to serving as governor, U.S. Senator, and Secretary of the Navy, Graham was the Whig nominee for Vice-President in 1852. The son of Gen. Joseph Graham and Isabella Davidson Graham, he was born on September 5, 1804, at “Vesuvius,” the family home in Lincoln County. His father was a Revolutionary War soldier and a pioneer in the region’s iron industry. Hillsborough Academy served as the forum for William’s college preparation. He enrolled in the University of North Carolina in 1820 and graduated with honors in 1824. He then studied law with Thomas Ruffin and opened a practice in Hillsborough in 1828.
