Abstract:

The John Idol, Jr. Papers contains the personal and professional papers of Dr. John Idol, Jr., a writer and scholar on the lives and works of Thomas Wolfe and Nathaniel Hawthorne. Included in the collection are Idol's personal journals and travel diaries, poetry, correspondence, and scrapbooks. The collection also contains materials including ephemera, academic articles, newspaper clippings, and media related to Thomas Wolfe and Nathaniel Hawthorne.

Biographical/Historical Note

Dr. John Idol, Jr. was raised in Watauga County, North Carolina and was a Professor of English at Clemson University. He is a scholar of authors Thomas Wolfe and Nathaniel Hawthorne. He is the author of A Thomas Wolfe Companion, Blue Ridge Heritage, and A Critical Companion to Nathaniel Hawthorne. Idol served as the editor of the Nathaniel Hawthorne Society newsletter from 1983 to 1985 and editor of the Nathaniel Hawthorne Review from 1986 until 1992. He also edited the works Hawthorne and Women: Engendering and Expanding the Hawthorne Tradition, Thomas Wolfe: An Illustrated Biography, and Thomas Wolfe's A Party at Jack's: A Novella.

Scope and Contents

The John Idol, Jr. Papers contains diaries and journals by Idol, scrapbooks, personal correspondence, and ephemera. Aside from personal materials, there is a dearth of ephemera, newsclippings, and articles on Thomas Wolfe and Nathaniel Hawthorne. Also included are articles written by Idol on various literary subjects, including Wolfe and Hawthorne. Audiovisual materials consists of personal photographs, photographs related to Thomas Wolfe, photographs of Hawthorne's works, microfilm of Thomas Wolfe manuscripts, microfilm of 18th century newspapers, an interview with Jeaneane Williams, and documentaries on the life and Works of Thomas Wolfe.

Arrangement

The collection is arranged into three series. Series I: Personal Papers and Series II: Professional Papers are both arranged alphabetically. Series III: Audiovisual is divided into four subseries: Subseries A: Black and White Photographs, Subseries B: Color Photographs, and Subseries C: Microfilm are all arranged alphabetically. Subseries D: Mixed Media is arranged by media format. User and archival CD copies of materials in Box 23 are housed in Subseries E.

This collection is open for use in the Dougherty Reading Room. An appointment for research is recommended. The Dougherty Reading Room is located on the 4th floor of Belk Library in Special Collections.

Acquisitions Information

The materials were donated by John Idol, Jr. in 2010 and 2012 and accessioned as AC.2010.083 and AC.2012.017.

Series Description

Series I: Personal Papers contains agriculture and horticulture newsclippings, brochures, maps and postcards from Idol's travels, personal diaries and travel notes, poetry by John Idol, Jr., and a scrapbook. Series II: Professional Papers contains papers related to John Idol, Jr.'s teaching and research. Of primary importance are materials on the life and works of Thomas Wolfe including ephemera, academic articles, newspapers clippings, and manuscript copies. Ephemera, academic articles, and newsclippings on Nathaniel Hawthorne are also included. The series holds articles by John Idol, Jr. along with chapters from Idol's Documentary History of Thomas Wolfe's Look Homeward Angel.

Series Description

Series III: Audiovisual is divided into five subseries.

Subseries A: Black and White Photographs contains a framed print of The Dress by Billy Cone, photographs of antique book illustrations, photographs of Thomas Wolfe and materials related to his life, and photographs of a stage production of Wolfe's Mannerhouse.

Subseries B: Color Photographs holds popular images of dragons, Hawthorne book cover photographs, slides related to Hawthorne's life and work, a photo essay on a snowstorm in January 2000, photographs of John Idol, Jr., Thomas Wolfe Memorial Angel Dedication photographs, and negatives of Thomas Wolfe related photographs.

Subseries C: Microfilm contains manuscript copies of works by Thomas Wolfe on microfilm as well as microfilm copies of newspapers and magazines from the early 18th century.

Subseries D: Mixed Media consists of an interview with Jeaneane Williams, a radio production of Thomas Wolfe's You Can't Go Home Again, a CD-ROM of Thomas Wolfe documentaries, and a VHS entitled Remembering Thomas Wolfe with Gladys Coates.
