Abstract:

Appalachia Photographs contain print photographs and negatives of the Appalachian region, mostly Northwestern North Carolina, but also some parts of Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee. It contains photographs, slides, and negatives. Images include Ashe, Avery, Mitchell, and Watauga Counties, Appalachian State Teachers College in Boone, and unidentified images of towns, people, and museum exhibits.

Biographical/Historical Note

Appalachian State University was founded as Watauga Academy in 1899. It became state-funded in 1903 and changed its name to Appalachian Training School. It focused primarily on high-school-level and teacher education. It became a junior college in 1921 and became known as Appalachian State Normal School in 1925 as an official teachers college. In 1929, it was renamed Appalachian State Teachers College. In 1967, it was awarded university status and became Appalachian State University. It became part of the University of North Carolina system in 1971.

Scope and Contents

Appalachia Photographs contain print photographs and negatives of the Appalachian region, mostly Northwestern North Carolina, but also some parts of Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee. It contains photographs, slides, and negatives. Images include Ashe, Avery, Mitchell, and Watauga Counties, Appalachian State Teachers College in Boone, and unidentified images of towns, people, and museum exhibits. The Collection consists of four series: Appalachian State Teachers College, Northwestern North Carolina Photographs, General Appalachia Photographs, and Negatives, Slides, and Color Materials.

The collection is arranged in four series: Series I: Appalachian State Teachers College; Series II: Northwest North Carolina Counties; Series III: General Appalachia Photographs; and Series IV: Negatives, Slides, and Color Materials.

Access Restrictions

This collection is open for use in the Dougherty Reading Room. An appointment for research is recommended. The Dougherty Reading Room is located on the 4th floor of Belk Library in Special Collections. Color photographs and negatives are housed separately within a cold storage unit and require advanced notice to view. Reproductions are made only for use as personal study or research. It is the user's responsibility to verify copyright ownership and to obtain all necessary permissions prior to the reproduction, publication, or other use of any portion of these materials. Duplication is restricted to photographers or heirs.

Materials were located in the W.L. Eury Appalachian Collection stacks in June 2001.

Processing Information

Processed in 2001. This collection was opened to the public in July 2002. Finding aid revised, 2010. Revised by Cynthia Harbeson, July 2014. This collection was reprocessed as part of a grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission. The grant funded extensive processing of the backlog within the W. L. Eury Appalachian Collection between 2012 and 2014.

Series I, Appalachian State Teachers College, includes images of the campus, students, faculty, and buildings. It is divided into four subseries. Subseries A, Buildings, contains images of campus buildings. Subseries B, Faculty and Staff, contains images of employees, teachers, and administrators. Subseries C, Students, consists of images of mostly unidentified students and student athletic groups. Subseries D, Other, includes images of the W.L. Eury Appalachian Collection, artifacts from the Appalachian Cultural Museum, and photographic copies of images from publications, including the Dew Drop, Globe, and Rhododendron.

Series Description

Series II, Northwestern North Carolina Counties, contains images identified from Northwestern North Carolina. It is divided into four subseries. Subseries A, Ashe County, includes images from West Jefferson, including the Beaver Creek Canning Company, Beaver Creek Parade, and the West Jefferson Baptist Church. Subseries B, Avery County, contains images of the International Mineral and Chemical Corporation and the 1964 Highland Games at Grandfather Mountain. Subseries C, Buncombe/Mitchell Counties, includes one image of the Biltmore House in Asheville, and images from Spruce Pine, NC. Subseries D, Watauga County, contains three images, Appalachian Mountain skiers, an interior photograph of the Mast General Store in Valle Crucis, and the Howard's Knob windmill.

Series III: General Appalachia Photographs, 1974, undated 

Series Description

Series III, General Appalachia, contains mostly unidentified photographs of the Appalachian region. The bulk of photographs are from Northwestern North Carolina, but also are from Virginia, Georgia, Kentucky, and Tennessee. There are three images (one duplicate) of coal mining, photographs of unidentified towns, houses, and buildings, unidentified people, farmers, and children, some illustrations, and a collection of images of an unidentified log cabin. Warren Brummer's photographs of Northwestern North Carolina are also included in this series as the images depicted are from multiple counties.

Series Description

Series IV: Negatives, Slides, and Color Materials, contain negatives, slides, and color materials and is divided into two subseries. Subseries A consists of black and white negatives and slides. Negatives include the print photographs as well as unprinted images of events and locations, primarily in Northwestern North Carolina. There are seven slides of coal mining included. Subseries B include color photographs, negatives, and slides. Color photographs include images of a red plaid blanket, a dance at Harris High School, and a waterfall. Color materials are stored separately from the collection in the Cold Storage unit.
