The Edmond Spencer Blackburn Papers concern Blackburn's Congressional and legal career and his family. Edmond Blackburn was a native of Watuaga County, North Carolina. A Republican, he had an extensive political career including the U.S. Congress from March 4, 1901 - March 3, 1903 and from March 4, 1905 until his death in 1912.

Biographical/Historical Note

Edmond Spencer Blackburn (1868-1912) was born in Watauga County, North Carolina, and lived in Western and Piedmont North Carolina for most of his life. Blackburn was a lawyer, legislator, Congressman and a Republican Party leader. He married Louise Parker of Washington, D.C. and they had two children, Cynthia and Martha. Blackburn died in 1912 from complications of a cold.

Scope and Contents

The Edmond Spencer Blackburn Papers contains photographs, biographies, correspondence, genealogical charts and Blackburn's obituary. Some items pertain to the Jones family, who are related to the Blackburn family by marriage. Selected letters, although handwritten, were copied by Mattie Blackburn Jones. It also contains biographies about Blackburn, correspondence, genealogical information, a cartoon and an obituary, organized by subject. Correspondence is mostly regarding Blackburn's death. Photographs include fourteen photographs of the Blackburn family and two magazine photographs. Ten photographs are unidentified. The identified individuals are Edmond Spencer Blackburn, Louise Parker Blackburn, Jeannette Dargan. Photographs are of various sizes. One frame was removed from the 6" x 4" photograph of Louise Parker Blackburn.


The collection is arranged alphabetically by subject.

The collection is open for use without restriction in the Dougherty Reading Room. An appointment for research is recommended.

Acquisitions Information

Mazy Jones Levinson donated this collection to the W.L. Eury Appalachian Collection in 1979. The accession number is MBL. This collection was opened to the public on October 2002.
