Biographical/Historical Note

Pulaski County, Virginia contained several mineral mines dating back to 1821. Reed Island Iron Company was located in Reed Island, a Pulaski County village on the Norfolk and Western Railway. A charcoal blast furnace called Boom Furnace began operation on Little Reed Island creek near Allisonia in 1882. It was taken over by the Virginia Iron, Coal and Company and continued to operate until 1906. It was one of the last functioning charcoal furnaces.
