Creator: Green, Lewis W., 1932-2008

Biographical/Historical Note

Lewis Green (1932-2008) was a native of Haywood County, North Carolina. He married and divorced Daisy Jones and had two sons. He received five battle stars in the Korean War (1950-1951). He worked with as an Asheville Citizen reporter during the 1960s. He founded a weekly Asheville newspaper, The Native Stone, a monthly political journal Overtones, and The Independent Torch: A Journal for The Outraged and The Outrageous. He also authored The Year of the Swan (1966), And Scatter the Proud (1969), The High-Pitched Laugh of a Painted Lady (1980), The Silence of Snakes (1984), and Spirit Bells: A Novel of the Korean War (1995). Many stories tend to be about mountain people and were set in the 1930s.

He taught creative writing and journalism at Warren Wilson College, Haywood Technical College, and was an adjunct professor at the University of North Carolina at Asheville. He was also a guest lecturer at several universities. In 2000, he was excommunicated by the Episcopal Church in part due to remarks in The Independent Torch. Green won the Associated Press features contest in 1962 and 1964 and third prize in 1968.

Considering himself a populist, Green wrote about Buncombe County's political and social controversies and corruption.

Scope and Contents

Lewis W. Green was a prolific writer, as testified by the many ideas, untitled drafts, novels, poetry, and newspapers in this collection. In his October 29, 2008 obituary for Green, Jason Sandford of the "Asheville News" states, "In Asheville journalism and political circles, few characters have stood out as much as Lewis Green, a journalism, writer, and political muckraker who had no equal here."

His collection includes most of those edited novel drafts, along with character profiles and ideas for more works, and an almost complete runs of his newspapers and journals, The Native Stone, The Independent Torch, and Overtones.

The correspondence folder in Series III contains letters and memos written to and from Lewis Green, chronologically organized. Many letter writers are subscribers to Green's newspapers and provide insight into the personalities and beliefs of Green's readership. It also includes a series of letters from an inmate in the state prison.

Arrangement

This collection is arranged into three series: Series I: Books, Drafts, and Edits; Series II: Periodical/Newspaper Publications; and Series III: Poetry, Unpublished Works, and Other Papers. Because many drafts/ideas are untitled and undated, they are filed as untitled drafts/manuscripts/thoughts. Edited drafts are most times undated, thus difficult to file in proper chronological order. The oversized newspapers and papers are stored at the end of the collection.

Autographed books were transferred to the W.L. Eury Appalachian Closed Stacks.

Series II: Periodical/Newspaper Publications, 1971-2001

Series Description

Series II: Periodical/Newspaper Publications: The holdings of the newspaper, The Native Stone, include issues chronologically organized, dating 1971-1974. These issues are tabloid sized on newsprint. The articles are all unattributed and tend to be populist. Includes a Children's Page.

This series alslo includes the periodical, Overtones: The Chronicles. This publication is on folded, typewriter paper with a colored card stock cover. Dates between Mid-June 1982 - Late November 1984.

The issues of The Independent Torch are chronologically organized, but volume numbering is a little tricky. Dating between August 15, 1985 - March 18, 2001, there are two sets of Volume 1 and Volume 2. Several articles focus on Asheville's All Souls Episcopal Church's decisions to allow same sex couples and to excommunicate Green.
