This collection contains materials from Edmonds Printing, Inc., formerly the B. D. Smith & Brothers printing company, located in Pulaski, Virginia. It consists primarily of ledger books, publications, printing plates, and photographs focusing mostly on Pulaski and Wythe Counties, Virginia.

Biographical/Historical Note

B. D. Smith and Brothers Printers, Inc., operated in Pulaski, Virginia, from 1891 to 1976. It was founded by Benjamin Smith, and originally located on Lee Street in Pulaski, before eventually relocating to Main Street. It was later owned and operated by his son Lewis (1876 - 1941) and grandson Conway (1907 - 1997). It became Edmonds Printing, Inc., after Conway Smith's retirement in 1976, when former employee David Eugene Edmonds (1931 - 2005) took over and operated the printing company until 1996.

Scope and Contents

This collection contains materials from the B. D. Smith & Brothers printing company and Edmonds Printing, Inc., located in Pulaski, Virginia. It consists of ledger books, publications, printing plates, and photographs focusing mostly on Pulaski and Wythe Counties, Virginia. It contains four ledgers, dating from 1904 to 1940, pamphlets, paperback books, and programs from 1970s to 1990s, and three black-and white photographs of late nineteenth century buildings. There is one wooden store-front sign from B. D. Smith & Bros. and a box of printing plates.

Arrangement

The collection is arranged into three series: Series I: Publications; Series II: Photographs and Artifacts; and Series III: Ledgers and Financial Records.

Access Restrictions

This collection is open for use in the Dougherty Reading Room. An appointment for research is recommended. The Dougherty Reading Room is located on the 4th floor of Belk Library in Special Collections.

Acquisitions Information

The W. L. Eury Appalachian Collection purchased the majority of this collection from Bookworm and Silverfish. The printing plates were additions to the collection and were accessioned in 2002 as AC.2002.027 and AC.2002.039.

Processing Information

Processed and opened to the public in November 2003. Revised by Cynthia Harbeson, July 2014. Additions to the collection made by Cynthia Harbeson, October 2014. This collection was reprocessed as part of a grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission. The grant funded extensive processing of the backlog within the W. L. Eury Appalachian Collection between 2012 and 2014.

Series I: Publications contains books printed by the printing company, alphabetized by author or title. It includes primarily handbooks and programs. Most books originate from southwest Viriginia communities in Carroll, Pulaski and Wythe Counties. Subject matter varys and includes local companies' employee handbooks, beauty contest and sport programs, county annual reports, directories, and church histories.

Series II: Photographs and Artifacts, 1891, undated 

Series Description

Series II: Photographs and Artifacts contains three black and white photographs of buildings from the late nineteen hundreds. Two photographs show the front and rear view of a building on Lee Street and is believed to be the B. D. Smith and Brothers building. The other photograph shows a brick building on Main Street, the first floor housing W. Keister and Co. Druggists. This building later held B. D. Smith and Brothers printing company, is now a Fine Arts Center, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This series also contains artifacts including a circular, wooden store-front sign which states "B.D. Smith and Bros. Printing - Think of Smith When You Need Printing - Established 1891". The sign is two feet in diameter and is painted yellow with black wording. There is also a number of printing plates. Most of the printing plates are identified on the backs, but some remain unidentified.

Series III: Ledgers and Financial Records, 1893-1940 

Series Description

Series III: Ledgers and Financial Records contains four ledgers dating from 1904 to 1940 as well as a receipt for a print job for menus dated August 3, 1893. The ledger books contain accounts for clients, including companies, colleges, and individuals, such as Virginia Iron, Coal, and Coke Company, Pulaski Mining Company, Ivanhoe Furnace, National Carbide Company, grocery stores, hardware stores, laundry facilities, lumber companies, telephone and electric companies, H.B. Staley Company, cotton mills, and Emory and Henry College. Ledger entries include dates and expenses.
