Abstract:

Marshall Ward Audio-cassettes consist of sixteen recordings of Ward's Jack tales and other stories.  Marshall Ward was raised in the Beech Mountain community of Avery County, North Carolina.

Creator: Ward, Marshall, 1906-1981

Biographical/Historical Note

Marshall Ward (December 10, 1906-1981) was born to Miles A. and Tessie Trivette Ward and raised in the Beech Creek community of Watauga County, North Carolina. Ward was the great grandson of Council Harmon, a renowned storyteller from Beech Creek. Ward's father also told Jack Tales and other Appalachian story tales. Ward assisted Richard Chase with collecting stories in Beech Mountain.

Scope and Contents

This collection contains sixteen audiocassettes (and CD user copies) of Marshall Ward telling tales and singing songs.  There is also a list of the tales included with the collection.  Tales are primarily Jack Tales, Hardy Hard Head, ghost stories, and other stories.  Tapes 1-5 are duplicated on tapes 6-10 and user copies were only made from the duplicate recordings because the original recordings are in poor condition.  Tapes 11-16 are dated December 1982, thirteen months after Ward's death. A comparison of earlier cassettes to these showed that the same voice was recorded. The true date is unknown; however, Ward states that he was 74 years old at the time of the recording which would place the recording after December 1980.

Arrangement

The collection is organized by audiocassette tape number.
