Biographical/Historical Note

Ina Faye Woestemeyer Van Noppen (1906-1980) and John James Van Noppen III (1906-1975) were a married couple who taught at Appalachian State Teachers College from 1947 to 1972. They had three children, Anne Faye Milsaps, Mary Robin Louise Taylor, and John IV. Ina Van Noppen, the daughter of Henry Frederick and Clara Belle Hendrickson Woestemeyer of Kansas, taught history and was one of the campus' earliest female professors with a doctorate. Her research interests propelled much of their research. John Van Noppen, son of John and Anne Pratt Van Noppen of Madison County, North Carolina, taught English. Ina Faye Woestemeyer Van Noppen wrote The Westward Movement: a Book of Readings on Our Changing Frontiers (1939),  The South, A Documentary History (1958), and  Stoneman's Last Raid (1961). John James Van Noppen researched Archibald Henderson and expected to write his biography. The Van Noppens co-wrote  Daniel Boone,  Backwoodsman: The Green Woods Were His Portion (1966) and  Western North Carolina Since The Civil War (1973). Ina won the 1962 Thomas Wolfe Award from the Western North Carolina Historical Association for her  Stoneman's Last Raid. In 1973, the couple won the 1973 Thomas Wolfe Award.
