Biographical/Historical Note

George P. Antone (born 1935) joined the Appalachian State University History department in 1967 as an Assistant Professor specializing in African American history, race relations, Willis Duke Weatherford (1876-1970), labor, and business history. He studied at Rutgers University (Ed.D., 1962) and Vanderbilt University (M.A., 1967, Ph.D., 1969). In 1969, he served as director of the Institute on the Negro in American History. Antone was appointed to the Advisory Council of the Division of Social Studies for the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. A year later, he received the Danforth Foundation's post graduate Black Studies fellowship.

In 1979, Antone became Chair of the History Department at Appalachian and received the College of Arts and Science's only endowed chair, I.G. Greer Distinguished Professorship in History in 1981. He joined the Historical Society of North Carolina in 1984.

Scope and Contents

The large amount of research on the furniture industry did not result in Antone publishing a paper on that subject, but it shows the economic importance of the furniture industry on North Carolina. Antone's collection of papers on and about W.D. Weatherford follow Weatherford's career in the Y.M.C.A. (Young Men's Christian Association, the Blue Ridge Assembly, Inc., and his other writings/presentations about the American Cast Iron Pipe Company history and racial issues of the times. The ledger in Series III is a ledger book with receipts from various vendors for goods ordered/delivered to Rosenbush Furniture Company in Demopolis, Alabama for the year of 1925. The receipts are glued onto the pages.

Arrangement

This collection is organized into five series: Series I: Research, Series II: Publications, Series III: Ledger, Series IV: Photographs, W.D. Weatherford Files, Research-related Papers, and Series V: The American Furniture Foundation and Hall of Fame. The files of Series I ,II, and III are in original order, but for ease of finding materials, Series IV and V were reorganized per subject.
