Biographical/Historical Note

Watauga County, North Carolina, is located in the northwestern corner of North Carolina, situated in the Appalachian Mountains. The county was formed from Ashe County, North Carolina in 1849. The ruggedness of the terrain was an obstacle to dense population development. Inhabitants were primarily descendants of Ulster Scot and Germanic ancestry. It historically has had a low African-American population residing in scattered communities throughout the county. The county was mostly rural in the 1940s and 1950s. The largest township was the county seat of Boone, which also contained Appalachian State Teachers College. Watauga County also included the communities of Bald Mountain, Beach Mountain, Beaver Dam, Blowing Rock, Cove Creek, Meat Camp, (Pottertown and Tamarack) Todd, and Valle Crucis.

William Allan (1881-1943) was a professor of medical genetics and founded the Department of Medical Genetics at Wake Forest College's Bowman Gray School of Medicine, the first department for genetics in the United States. Florence C. Dudley was a project field worker, whose primary contribution to the Watauga County Study was interviewing families and constructing pedigrees. C. Nash Herndon, another field worker and a Professor of Medical Genetics at the Bowman Gray School of Medicine, assisted the project by conducting interviews with patients and providing names of clients to Florence Dudley. Herndon became the head of the Department of Medical Genetics following Allan's death.

The Papers of Dr. William Allan ("Papers, 1938-1944," Collection #314-B) is/are located in the Dorothy Carpenter Medical Archives, Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem, NC. It contains 19 cubic feet of material, including eugenics correspondence, correspondence between Allan and the public regarding genetic counseling, as well as family histories, studies on Watauga Study families exhibiting genetic diseases, indexed by name and diagnosis, and case studies and family pedigrees of patients being treated for genetic diseases. Most correspondence is with his two field assistants, Florence Dudley and C. Nash Herndon.

Scope and Contents

The William Allan Papers consists of microfilm reels of genealogical information for over 250 northwestern North Carolina families, gathered during a Bowman Grey Medical School study conducted by William Allan, C. Nash Herndon and Florence Dudley. This collection is a microfilmed copy of a portion of the William Allan Papers, 1938-1944, a larger collection located at the Dorothy Carpenter Medical Archives in Winston-Salem, NC.

The collection includes information on the genealogies of many established families from Watauga County, North Carolina, as well as studies of twin comparisons, town histories and data, tax information, hospital admission records, and genetic disease studies. The study interviewed hundreds of Watauga County natives from 1942 to 1953 in order to determine family structures and construct pedigrees. Records and pedigrees were constructed using Bible Records, interviews, published family histories, a scrapbook of James Swanson of Lenoir, North Carolina, oral histories, medical records, court documents, and newspaper clippings. Pedigrees list birth, marriage and death dates, siblings, spouses, and children. Many pedigrees have dates and locations, and are accompanied with obituaries, transcribed Bible Records and tombstones (for a key to pedigree symbols, see Reel 11, Watauga Survey). Materials also include a collection of medical conditions and diseases, including Mongolism (Reel 1, Folder 26) Neurofibromatosis (Reel 1, Folder 59), Retinitis Pigmentosa (Reel 1, Folder 79), Optic Atrophy (Reel 2, Folder 19), Chorio-retinitis (Reel 2, Folder 42), Blindness (Reel 2, Folder 117), Gyrate Atrophy (Reel 3, Folder 67), and Glaucoma (Reel 4, Folder 74).

Pedigrees document families primarily from Watauga, Ashe, Caldwell, Mitchell and Wilkes Counties. Transcriptions of family histories in the scrapbook of James Swanson of Lenoir, NC, are included for some families, and Dudley - Herndon correspondence included in many folders. The material is divided into six series: Historical Data, Family Information, Bald Mountain Township, Genetics Research, Additional Family Information, and Restricted Files.

Due to the nature of microfilming, quality was not assured before the film was developed. Microfilm is black and white and includes negative images rather than positive ones (white pages with black marks appear as black pages with white marks). Quality can vary from light to dark, details are occasionally blurry, and materials are sometimes illegible. Some materials are so dark as to be completely indistinguishable. Pedigrees originally included red marks to indicate intermarriage within families, which are not distinctive in black and white. Folder names and numbers written in pencil are difficult to read and are often invisible. A portion of families with surnames beginning with "G" were omitted due to a microfilming error. Users may be required to access the original documents in Winston-Salem for clarification.

Arrangement

Documents were microfilmed in their original order.  Microfilm reels are numbered consecutively.  There are reels #9A and #9B, but no reel #8.  Restricted files are on reel #14.  Box 1 contains user copies while Box 2 contains the original microfilm reels and Box 3 contains duplicates.

The collection is arranged in six series: Series I: Historical Data; Series II: Family Information; Series III: Bald Mountain Township; Series IV: Genetics Research; Series V: Additional Family Information; and Series VI: Restricted Files.
