Abstract:

The Linville Higgins Letter is a one paged letter written by Linville Higgins of Alleghany County, North Carolina in 1871 to his grandson John Higgins. This collection provides insight into health of elderly people, crops, political opinion during Reconstruction era Appalachian North Carolina.

Biographical/Historical Note

Linville Higgins (1796-1881) was a farmer in the Glade Creek township in present day Alleghany County, North Carolina. He married Judiah Kirby. They had ten children: Goldman, Linville Bryant, John Kirby, Frances, Thomas, Palymra, William, David, Calvin and Sarah. Linville and Judiah were buried in the Linville Higgins Cemetery near Ennice, North Carolina.

Scope and Contents

Linville Higgin's letter to his adult grandson John Higgins provides a great deal of insight into the opinions and experience of Reconstruction era Appalachian people. He mentions his personal health, current prices for crops and his religious beliefs. He describes his marriage as being in "a grait del of trouble" due to the ill health of his wife. He also states that he is "well pleased that the "Rebs and Cucluks" lost the state convention to the Union Party.

This collection is open for use in the Dougherty Reading Room. An appointment for research is recommended. The Dougherty Reading Room is located on the 4th floor of Belk Library in Special Collections.

Acquisitions Information

On 13 January 2005, Union Station Kansas City donated this collection to the University Archives, which subsequently gave it to the W.L. Eury Appalachian Collection. The accession number is AC.2005.006. It was opened to the public on 4 March 2005.
