Abstract:

Seniority of Roanoke Shop Employees Covered by the Mechanical Department Association Agreement is a bound book with a list of boilermaker's seniority roster in the Norfolk and Western Railway boilermaker shop of Roanoke, Virginia.  This collection illustrates unionizing in Appalachian Virginia within the Norfolk and Western Railway Company boilermakers.

Biographical/Historical Note

In 1943, a Memorandum Agreement between the Norfolk and Western Railway and the Boilermaker's Organization provided for increased advancement of members.  This collection illustrates unionizing in Appalachian Virginia within the Norfolk and Western Railway Company boilermakers.

Scope and Contents

The 1943 ledger contains the names of boilermakers and shop hands and their date of seniority in regards to an agreement between the Boilermaker's Organization and Norfolk and Western Railway Company about pay in the Roanoke Shop. It provides the 1943 Memorandum Agreement between the company and union as to advancement of members. It contains a table of contents by occupation such as coach repairier, painters, or scrap inspectors. Seniority rosters include the employee's surname, first name or initials, seniority date, and retirement date. Pages created during the 1940s include military service.

This ledger contains approximately 110 pages. It does not contain an index of employee names.

The W.L. Eury Appalachian Collection acquired this collection in 2002. The accession number is AC.2005.016. The collection was opened to the public in April 2005.
