Abstract:

The Rhea School Collection consists of a March 6, 1912 Closing Exercises Program from the Rhea School of Sullivan County, Tennessee. Also included are two pages from Thelma Barnes' Adventures in Education: Sullivan County, 1773-1983. These pages include a photograph and a description of the Rhea School. This collection contains a material culture example of an early twentieth century one-room school located in Appalachian Tennessee. The program lists the names of the teacher, students and the titles of their recitations.

Biographical/Historical Note

The Rhea School was built in 1833 as a log building in the 23rd Common School District in Sullivan County, Tennessee. In 1911, a frame building replaced the log building. It closed in 1932.
