This collection contains correspondence, notebooks, pictures and other items regarding Ina Rose Greer (later Ina Rose Greer Akers) of Marion, Virginia. Items in this collection give examples of social activities and courtship practices in Appalachia circa 1916-1917.

Biographical/Historical Note

Ina Rose Greer was the daughter of Walter Eugene Greer (1877-1924) and Phoebe Alice Blevins (1872-1951). Ina Rose was born in Marion, Virginia in 1899 and lived there most of her life. At some point she married Norville Akers, a native of Abingdon, Virginia. She passed away in 1992 and is buried in Marion, Virginia.

Scope and Contents

This collection contains correspondence, notebooks, pictures and other items regarding Ina Rose Greer (later Ina Rose Greer Akers) of Marion, Virginia. Ms. Greer was involved with Southwestern Virginia Incorporated, which was a regional chamber of commerce. Items in this collection give examples of social activities and courtship practices in Appalachia circa 1916-1917. Additionally, the types of work done by Southwestern Virginia Inc. in the late 1930's and funeral mementos are exampled in the collection.

This collection is open for use in the Dougherty Reading Room. An appointment for research is recommended. The Dougherty Reading Room is located on the 4th floor of Belk Library in Special Collections.

Acquisitions Information

W.L. Eury Appalachian Collection purchased this collection from Bookworm and Silverfish on 8 October 1997. No accession number exists. This collection was opened to the public on November 2005.
