Biographical/Historical Note

The Pittsburgh and West Virginia Railway Company organized under the laws of Pennsylvania and West Virginia as a merger of the Pittsburgh and West Virginia Railway Company of Pennsylvania and the Pittsburgh and West Virginia Railway Company of West Virginia in 1916. The Pittsburgh and West Virginia Railway Company is the successor of Wabash Pittsburgh Terminal Railway Company in 1916. The Wabash Pittsburgh Terminal Railway Company, which has 59 miles of rail, was created from a merger of the 1) Pittsburgh, Carnegie and Western Railroad Company, which was formed in 1868 as the Pittsburgh and Mansfield Railroad Company, 2) Cross Creek Railroad Company of West Virginia, which was constructed in 1901 to 1904, and 3) Pittsburgh, Toledo and Western Railroad Company.

In October 1899, the Pittsburgh State Line Railway was created from the Pittsburgh, Canonsburg and State Line Railroad, which was organized in October 14, 1889. It was subsequently succeeded by the Pittsburg, Akron, and Western Railroad Comapny in September 1904. As of 1942, this line was a subsidiary of the Pittsburgh and West Virginia Railway Company.

The West Side Belt Railroad Company was a single-track, standard-gage, steam railroad, situated within the State of Pennsylvania, extending from West End, Pittsburgh, to Clairton, with a branch from south of West End, Pittsburg, to Banksville for 48 miles. It merged with the Little Saw Mill Run Railroad Company, which was created in 1850, in 1897 and Bruce and Clairton Railroad Company in 1902.

Many of the documents pertain to the 1927 petitions for a Connellsville Extension, which ran from Cochran's Mill to Connellsville in Fayette County, Pennsylvania. Railways, such as New York, Chicago and St. Louis Railroad Company, petitioned to the government to deny the construction of this extension.
