Biographical/Historical Note

Shulls Mills is located in Watauga County, North Carolina. The area, historically situated on a toll road between Valle Crucis and Blowing Rock, boomed with the arrival of the Whiting Lumber Company in 1917. The densely populated timber town lasted until around 1925 when the company's operations focused on other sites. The 1940 Flood destroyed the railroad bed running into Shulls Mills and residents predominantly decided not to rebuild.
