Biographical/Historical Note

Wythe County, Virginia is located in western Virginia. It was formed from Montgomery County in 1790. It was named after George Wythe, the first Virginian signer of the Declaration of Independence. It contains approximately 500 square feet of land.

The Jackson Ferry Shot Tower, located in Wythe County, Virginia, is one of only a handful remaining in the United States. It is believed that Thomas Jackson built the shot tower just after the Revolutionary War. The purpose of the shot tower was to produce lead shot to be used in firearms. Although most other shot towers were constructed of brick, this shot tower was built of limestone with walls 2.5 feet thick.
