Abstract:

The Hartzog Family Papers is a collection of materials from the Wiley Hartzog family of Boone, North Carolina. Wiley Hartzog ran a construction company and built houses in Watauga County, North Carolina. Hartzog was also the Boone postmaster. This collection contains information about Boone's house and building construction business, family life, Boone United Methodist Church, and Appalachian State University.

Biographical/Historical Note

Wiley Gordon Hartzog (May 9, 1876-October 2, 1985) was born to Thomas Filmore Hartzog and Mary Jane Miller Hartzog of Watauga County, North Carolina. He worked as a teacher, a contractor,and a postmaster. On January 1, 1919, he married Alta Hutchison (1888-1987), the daughter of William and Elizabeth Hutchison. She was also a teacher. Their children include Kathleen (born on February 22, 1920) and Wiley Gordon, Jr. They lived on Hardin Street adjacent to Appalachian State University and deeded some land to the University.

Scope and Contents

This collection contains materials related to the construction of buildings and houses by W. G. Hartzog as well as financial papers detailing company costs, taxes, and employee information. Personal papers include ephemera from the Watauga County community, records of land purchases, utility bills, and insurance information. There is an extensive amount of materials related to the Boone Methodist Church including pamphlets, commitments to sobriety, church board meeting minutes, and church related literature. Correspondence holds correspondence between the members of W. G. Hartzog's immediate family. Oversize materials include blueprints from construction projects, a Boone Methodist Church poster, artwork, newsclippings, and a certificate signed by President Franklin Roosevelt confirming W. G. Hartzog as Postmaster of Boone, North Carolina.

Arrangement

The collection is arranged into six series.

Series I: Business is divided into two subseries. Suberies A: Building Files is arranged alphabetically by last name and Subseries B: Financial is arranged alphabetically.

Series II: Personal, Series III: Methodist Church Materials, Series IV: Correspondence, and Series V: Oversize are all arranged alphabetically. Series VI: Photographs is arranged into two folders: family photos and images of the house Wiley Hartzog built.

Access Restrictions

This collection is open for use in the Dougherty Reading Room. An appointment for research is recommended. The Dougherty Reading Room is located on the 4th floor of Belk Library in Special Collections.

Acquisitions Information

The Hartzog Family Papers were donated to Appalachian State University by Wiley Hartzog, Jr. circa 1987. Artifacts, including clothing items, were transferred to the Appalachian Cultural Museum on 9 May 2003. Books were inventoried and included in the online catalog. This collection does not have an accession number. It was opened to the public in 2007.
