Abstract:

Reverend Reggie Longcrier Collection of Papers consist of three documents describing Hickory, North Carolina-based church, Exodus Missionary Outreach Church, and the pastor's pro-gay marriage question in the 2007 CNN-You Tube Democratic Presidential debate. This collection provides an alternative view of Black Appalachian churches as homophobic.

Biographical/Historical Note

Reverend Reggie Longcrier founded the Hickory, North Carolina-based church, Exodus Missionary Outreach Church in 1997. It is a non-denominational multi-ethnic church. He is also the executive director of Exodus Homes, a faith-based agency, offering transitional and permanent supportive housing for homeless recovering addicts, alcoholics, and formerly incarcerated people.

Scope and Contents

The Reverend Reggie Longcrier Collection of Papers provide an overview of his Hickory, North Carolina-based church, Exodus Missionary Outreach Church, as well as his participation in the 2007 CNN-You Tube Democratic Presidential debate, in which he asked why it is acceptable to use religion to deny gay Americans their rights to marriage.

The brochure describes the Exodus Missionary Outreach Church providing contact information and its church mission. A transcript of Rev. Longcrier's first sermon after his question was shown on national television explains his inclusive approach to sexuality.

The Compact disc contains a copy of the sermon which Reverend Longcrier gave after his You Tube question was presented on the 2007 CNN Democratic Presidential debate.
