Biographical/Historical Note

Chuck Hemrick is a traditional musician and a retired television cameraman and WGHP, a High Point-based television station. He produced this popular weekly news feature which focused on cultural traditions, especially traditional music, of western North Carolina and southwestern Virginia. These two-to-three minute features were broadcast by High Point, North Carolina’s WGHP-TV FOX 8, as part of the Friday evening news, from February 1990 to September 1993.

Scope and Contents

"Blue Ridge Views" consisted primarily of videos about Appalachian musicians and festivals. Musicians include Bill Monroe, Doc Watson, Ralph Stanley, and Sheila Kay Adams Barnhill. Although many festivals are music-oriented, others focus on molasses, the Appalachian Trail, and other topics. Other subjects include cheese making, pottery, gee haw whimmy diddles, the authors Carl Sandburg and Thomas Wolfe, grist mills among other topics.

Arrangement

The video cassettes are arranged in original order. The cassettes are the original camera tapes used within the television studio to produce the "Blue Ridge Views" segments. Digital versions are in the process of being produced. Those that are available are linked below within the Container List. They require a QuickTime Plug-in.
