Kenneth Baldwin Artwork consists of approximately fifty charcoal, pastels, and watercolors by Army Sergeant Kenneth Baldwin of Greenville, South Carolina. Baldwin illustrates the peoples and scenery of India, Burma, and China as well as army experiences.

Biographical/Historical Note

Sgt. Kenneth Baldwin (14 July 1914-07 March 1999) was a self-taught artist born in Black Mountain, North Carolina. He graduated from Pickens High School in Pickens, South Carolina. He resided in Greenville, South Carolina. He worked as sketch maker who enlarged designs onto fabrics with the aid of a camera in the textile mills. He joined the Army in June 1943 and worked as a Camera Technician for 26 months. His battle and campaign includes Central Burma, India and the China Offensive. He won a World War II Victory medal and an American Thea SV Ribbon Apt. Medal. He was discharged in March 1946. His wife's name is unknown. He died in Taylors of Greenville County, South Carolina.

Scope and Contents

The collection depicts life in India, Burma, and China during World War II using sketches, paintings, and photographs. Some of the artwork is complete and picture unidentified citizens and soldiers, nature and military scenes, and town life.


The collection is arranged by type of media. The Watercolors smaller than 7"x5" folder is arranged first by those with a number with the unnumbered items following.

This collection is open for use in the Dougherty Reading Room. An appointment for research is recommended. The Dougherty Reading Room is located on the 4th floor of Belk Library in Special Collections.

Acquisitions Information

Original title was World War II Artist: India/Burma/China, renamed by archivist. The W.L. Eury Appalachian Collection purchased this collection in May 2008. Its accession number is AC.2008.019. It opened to the public in June 2008.
