The Hollins College Euzelian Society Photograph consists of one 14" x 10.5" black and white photograph of the Hollins College' Euzelian Literary Society, circa 1896.

Biographical/Historical Note

Hollins College, a women's liberal arts college, was founded as the coeducational Valley Union Seminary in Roanoke, North Carolina in 1842. In 1854, it became Virginia's first women's college changing its name to Hollins Institute three years later. It was renamed Hollins College in 1911 and Hollins University in 1998. Hollins University has offered graduate programs since 1958. All undergraduates are female while graduate programs accept males.

Euzelian Society began in 1855 by four Hollins College students as a literary society, which contributed books and held readings. Euzelian means "Good Style" in Greek. They created a handwritten literary magazine named The Album in the 1870s. Along with the Euepian Literary Society, it published The Annual beginning in 1886. In 1915, they renamed it the Hollins Quarterly. They also began their own library in 1880.

Scope and Contents

The Hollins College Euzelian Society Photograph consists of one 14" x 10.5" black and white photograph of the Hollins College' Euzelian Literary Society, circa 1896.  The photograph includes 52 women in caps and gowns. The back lists their names. Biographical information, such as death dates, is included for some students.

This collection is open for use in the Dougherty Reading Room. An appointment for research is recommended. The Dougherty Reading Room is located on the 4th floor of Belk Library in Special Collections.

Acquisitions Information

The W.L. Eury Appalachian Collection purchased this photograph in May, 2008. Its accession number is AC.2008.020. It was opened to the public in June, 2008.
