Munsey Poole Collection consists of a typed copy of the story of Caty Sage, a Virginia Colonial era American Indian.

Creator: Poole, Munsey

Biographical/Historical Note

Katy Sage was born to James and Lovis Ott Sage of Elk Creek of Grayson County, Virginia in 1787. It is believed that Sage was a native of Maryland or England. In 1792, Katy disappeared from the neighborhood. In 1848, her brother Charles met a Caucasian woman living with the Wyandotte Indians at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. She resembled the Sage family and had a birthmark which Katy had. She went by the name Sally but stated her birth name was Katy. She reportedly had been stolen by a Caucasian man who then sold her to Cherokees, who in turn gave her to the Wyandotte Indians. She lived the remainder of her life with her Wyandotte family and died in 1853.

Munsey M. Poole was the news editor of the Galax Gazette during the 1950s and 1960s. Poole also wrote The Miracle Mountain Minister (1967).

Scope and Contents

"The Story of Caty Sage" is a compilation of a series of Munsey Poole's 1964 newspaper articles for the Galax Gazette about Katy Sage. The first page spells her name as Caty while the story's text spells it as Katy. It gives various versions of the Katy Sage story and quotes Sage family letters.
