Biographical/Historical Note

Bob Henry Baber, a poet and novelist, holds a B.A. in English from Antioch College, Yellow Springs, Ohio, and a doctorate in creative writing from the Union Institute, Cincinnati, Ohio. He was raised on Long Island, New York, and on his grandparents' farm outside of Richwood, in Nicholas County, West Virginia. Baber's poetry has appeared in the Antioch/Appalachia publication What's a Nice Hillbilly Like You...?, and in works published by the Southern Appalachian Writer's Cooperative (SAWC), a group Baber helped to found circa 1976-1977. In 1977, SAWC published Soupbean: An Anthology of Contemporary Appalachian Literature. Prior to his involvement with SAWC, Baber was a member of the Soupbean Collective, a group of writers living in Beckley, West Virginia, and affiliated with Antioch College/Appalachia.

Baber's published works include A Picture from Life's Other Side: Appalachian Poems, 1994; Assorted Life Savers & Poems from the Mountains, 1976; and the chapbooks, Ice Cycle Soup, 1986, and In the Time of Nick, 1988. Each chapbook contains illustrations by Boyd Carr.

Baber edited several published collections of poetry, including Old Wounds, New Words: Poems from the Appalachian Poetry Project, with George Ella Lyon and Gurney Norman, published in 1994 by the Jesse Stuart Foundation; If I Fell In Love With a Watermelon: Poems and Stories by Children from West Whitesburg Elementary, 1989; and Time is an Eightball: Poems from Juvenile Homes & the Penitentiary of New Mexico, 1984; and, with Jim Webb, Mucked, published by SAWC in 1978 as a response to devastating floods in 1977.

In 2004, Baber was elected mayor of Richwood, West Virginia.

Each poem is printed on 11" x 14" pink card stock. Signed by Bob Henry Baber. Calligraphy, in blue ink, is attributed to Sirko. Illustrations by Boyd Carr.

This collection is open for use in the Dougherty Reading Room. An appointment for research is recommended. The Dougherty Reading Room is located on the 4th floor of Belk Library in Special Collections.

Acquisitions Information

The items were collected at the 24th Annual (2001) Appalachian Studies Association Conference at Snowshoe Mountain Resort, in Pocahontas County, West Virginia. The accession number is AC.2008.050. The collection was opened to the public January, 2009.
