Biographical/Historical Note

Allegany County, Maryland lies in the Appalachian Mountains. It was formed December 25, 1789, and its name "Allegany" is derived from a local Native American work, oolikhamma, meaning "beautiful stream."

These warrants and summons are sometimes illegible, but of those legible, the following people were involved: 1731 (?): A summons of William Koile, yeoman, and wife Elizabeth, to answer to Thomas Summer October 1791: A summons to Robert Brett to testify for John Tomlinson at suit of James Doderworth October 1791: To Sheriff of Allegany County to summons John Taylor to testify for David Smith April 21, 1797: To Sheriff of Allegany County to take (arrest) Isaac Kent, yeoman April 24, 1797: to Sheriff of Allegany County to take (arrest) John Stead, yeoman April 26, 1797: to Sheriff of Allegany County to take (arrest) Matthew Terrch, yeoman July 7, 1797: to Sheriff of Allegany County to take (arrest) Thomas Clinton, yeoman July 7, 1797: to Sheriff of Allegany County to take (arrest) Thomas Clinton, yeoman (2nd charge) August 26, 1797: to Coroner of Allegany County to take Robert Sinclaire, Esquire.
