Biographical/Historical Note

The waterfall depicted on this card stereograph is located in Yellowstone National Park between Norris Junction and Canyon Village. In the late 1880s, the name of the waterfall was changed from Norris Falls to Virginia Cascade after Virginia Gibson, wife of Yellowstone Park Association president Charles Gibson. The newer name is thought to have survived because geologist Arnold Hague was partial to the idea of assigning names of states to Yellowstone Park's geologic features.

Scope and Contents

The Virginia Cascade Stereograph is a 3.5" x 7" black and white stereoscopic photograph intended for use with a stereoscope or stereo card viewer. The date this item was created is not known. This card stereograph, with the caption "Virginia Cascades," depicts two men standing on rocks in a pool at the bottom of a waterfall. Although there is a waterfall in Giles County, Virginia, known as Cascade Falls, the scenic attraction depicted here more closely resembles the Virginia Cascade, a waterfall located in Yellowstone National Park. The appearance of lodgepole pines in the background also suggests the photographs were taken in the western United States.
