Biographical/Historical Note

The Natural Bridge is in Rockbridge County, Virginia and is a geological formation in which Cedar Creek has carved out a gorge in the mountainous limestone terrain, forming a natural arch.

Scope and Contents

The Natural Bridge Stereograph is a 3.5" x 7" black and white stereoscopic photograph intended for use with a stereoscope or stereo card viewer. This card stereograph depicts the bridge and the surrounding landscape as it appeared circa 1902. A brief history and description of the Natural Bridge, the surrounding area, and nearby scenic attractions appears on verso. Beneath the description, the caption, "One of Nature's curious structures-the famous Natural Bridge, Rockbridge County, Virginia," appears again in English and also in French, German, Spanish, Danish, and Russian.

This collection is open for use in the Dougherty Reading Room without restrictions. An appointment for research is recommended. The Dougherty Reading Room is located on the 4th floor of Belk Library in Special Collections. A stereo card viewer is needed to use this item. Please request one from the reading room attendant.
