Biographical/Historical Note

The Tobias Smyth listed in the agreement is most likely one of the four founders of Emory & Henry College. Smyth served on the College's Board of Trustees from 1836 until his death in 1872. His farm was located about a mile north of the College campus (located in Emory, Virginia) and is likely where the timber specified in the agreement was located.
