Biographical/Historical Note

A group of men in Lenoir, North Carolina, including J.M. Bernhardt and G.W.F. Harper, organized the first furniture factory in Caldwell County, N.C., and one of the first half dozen in the state – the Lenoir Furniture Co. The factory began operations in February 1890 but shut down in 1891 due to mounting debt. After a series of fits and starts, the operation was purchased in 1899 by the Harper and Bernhardt families and reopened in 1900 as the Harper Furniture Co. In 1929, the company was absorbed into the Broyhill chain of factories. The Caldwell Furniture Company was purchased by Thomasville Furniture Industries, Inc. in 1968.
