Frank Borkowski Collection of Railway Calendars features pristine calendars of 2003-2007 and two different 2010 versions, all printed by The Hickory Printing Group.

Biographical/Historical Note

On each calendar is a statement about the featured photograph. These statements are:

2003 “Carolina & Northwestern Railway Ten Wheeler (4-6-0 Type) #206 at the Hickory Depot in October, 1941 with passenger train #2 from Chester, S.C.”

2004 “Carolina & Northwestern southbound freight train at Hickory, N.C., pulled by 2-8-0 type locomotives #272 and #516 in 1941.”

2005 “Southern Railway Mikado type 2-8-2 freight locomotive in passenger service, Hickory, N.C. 1941.”

2006 “Southern Railway ‘Carolina Special’ Train #21 near Hildebrand, N.C., December 7, 1941. Locomotive 4-8-2 #1490.”

2007 “At 2:00 p.m., December 7, 1941, Southern Railway Santa Fe type 5079 steamed west through Longview, North Carolina, with an ‘extra’ freight. Tommy Reese, who is now our chairman, captured the moment, and we have reproduced the photograph here.”

2010 “Southern Railway #4501 is a steam locomotive built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1911. Originally a freight locomotive, in its later years it was used for passenger excursion service by Southern, as seen in this photo. After retirement, #4501 was featured in movies and music videos. Today it has been restored and is on display at the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum in Chattanooga.”

2010 “Thomas W. Reese - Conservationist, Sportsman, Photographer, Railroader, Golfer, Printer, Innovator. Born October 17, 1924, died November 26, 2009”

This collection of railway calendars from Frank Borkowski features pristine calendars of 2003-2007 and two different 2010 versions, all printed by The Hickory Printing Group.

Access Restrictions

This collection is open for use in the Dougherty Reading Room. An appointment for research is recommended. The Dougherty Reading Room is located on the 4th floor of Belk Library in Special Collections.

Frank Borkowski was the donor of this collection in 2009. Accession numbers AC.2009.022 and AC.2010.074

Processed by Anita Elliott, August 2013. This collection was processed as part of a grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission. The grant funded extensive processing of the backlog within the W. L. Eury Appalachian Collection between 2012 and 2014.
