Biographical/Historical Note

Dr. Susan S. Cole is Professor Emeritus from the Department of Theatre and Dance at Appalachian State University. She was hired at Appalachian as Director of Theatre in 1975 and served as chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance from its formation in 1989 to her retirement in 2005. Prior to her 30 years at Appalachian, shw was the scenographer at Bakersfield College in California and Director of Theatre and chair of the Department of Fine Arts at Keuka College in New York. She has directed about 60 plays and has designed scenery and lighter for over 50 productions and costumes for more than 80. Also a theatre historian, her research interests, publications and presentations have been focused on nineteenth century American actors and actresses, playwright Romulus Linney, and the Elizabethan Public Playhouse.

One of her research focal points was playwright Romulus Linney (1930-2011), author of numerous plays, director of several, and professor of writing at Columbia, Princeton, the University of Pennsylvania, among others. Awards for his work include two Obie Awards, one in 1980, the other in 1992, the National Critics Award on two occasions, once for his adaptation of his novel 'Heathen Valley' and also for his play "2", and the 1999 Award of Merit Medal for Drama from the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters.

Scope and Contents

This collection contains copies of several Linney scripts, articles about the playwright & his works, play reviews, programs, announcements, correspondence, and some handwritten notes, dating from 1970 to 2005. Also, several VHS & user-copy CDs of speeches and conference presentations are included.

Arrangement

The collection was arranged into two series: Papers and Audio-Visual materials. Papers includes articles on Romulus Linney, reviews of his works, articles & speeches written by Mr. Linney, copies of several of his play scripts, and Dr. Cole's presentations/introductions of Mr. Linney at various venues. Series II: Audiovisual Materials consists of original VHS & audio cassettes copies of live lectures and TV conversations featuring Romulus Linney.

This collection is open for use in the Dougherty Reading Room without restriction. An appointment for research is recommended. The Dougherty Reading Room is located on the 4th floor of Belk Library in Special Collections.

Series Description: Series I: Papers includes articles on Romulus Linney, reviews of his works, articles & speeches written by Mr. Linney, copies of several of his play scripts, and Dr. Cole's presentations/introductions of Mr. Linney at various venues. There are copies of a dissertation and a thesis written by two ASU students on Mr. Linney and his works. The papers are sorted by type and arranged by date of publication within folders.
