Abstract:

Materials in the Appalachian Cultural Museum Records cover the history of the museum from 1989 until its close in 2006. The collection contains materials concerned with the museum administration, correspondence, exhibits, events, and publicity.

Biographical/Historical Note

The Appalachian Cultural Museum opened its doors in August 1989. The 13,000 square foot museum housed in University Hall featured over twenty exhibit areas which provided an overview of the history of the Blue Ridge Region. The museum's displays focused on topics including Native American artifacts, Daniel Boone, and the family history of Judith Barber, a Wilkes County woman born into slavery 1822. Permanent exhibits addressed the topics of the natural environment, mountain music, the Blue Ridge Parkway, Jack tales, Grandfather Mountain, mountain families, textiles, handicrafts, moonshining, the Civil War, and early industry. A series of exhibits also focused on tourism, skiing, the Land of Oz resort, and NASCAR racing. The museum was closed in 2006 and the collection of artifacts was dispersed to other regional museums in 2012.

Scope and Contents

This collection contains official paperwork and correspondence from the Cultural Museum, newsclippings, research materials related to exhibits and projects, photographs of the museum, publicity materials, and posters. Also contained in the collection are historic photographs, paintings, slides, floppy discs, reel-to-reel media, laserdiscs, VHS tapes, audiocassettes, CDs, DVDs, and numerous small artifacts.

Arrangement

The collection is arranged into six series. Individual subseries are arranged alphabetically except for Series IV: Museum Subseries F: Inventories, ordered by accession numbers, Series V: Audiovisual, organized by media formant, and Series VI: Oversize, arranged by individual object/document size.

Administrative Information

Access Restrictions

This collection is open for use in the Dougherty Reading Room. An appointment for research is recommended. The Dougherty Reading Room is located on the 4th floor of Belk Library in Special Collections.

Acquisitions Information

The collection was received from the Cultural Museum and the History Department with transfers beginning in 2006. The last transfer of materials occured in the spring of 2012.

Processing Information

Processing completed by Trevor McKenzie, July 2013. Finding aid generated July 2013. This collection was processed as part of a grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission. The grant funded extensive processing of the backlog within the W. L. Eury Appalachian Collection between 2012 and 2014.

Series III: Exhibits, 1904-2006

Series Description

Series III: Exhibits is divided into four subseries. Subseries A: General includes research materials and text used in constructing the exhibits featured in the Cultural Museum. Subseries B: Land of Oz holds materials related to Beech Mountain's Land of Oz theme park including ephemera such as postcards and candie boxes as well as documents from the park including the script to the Emerald City puppet show and manuscripts of original sheet music. Also included are articles about the history of the Land of Oz, correspondence about the park's history, and a list of Oz items held by the Museum. Subseries C: Ski Industry contains information on ski resorts in western North Carolina including Blowing Rock Ski Lodge (now Appalachian Ski Mountain) and Hawksnest. Newsclippings and ephemera outline the history of the resorts and winter events such as the Ski Queen pagaents of the 1960s. Subseries D: Exhibit Labels and Images holds text boards and small images used in the Museum's exhibits.

Series IV: Museum, 1887-2012, undated

Series Description

Series IV: Museum is divided into six subseries. Subseries A: General includes the Museum's contacts, mailing list, docent materials, guestbook, comments from guests, and other information about the Museum. Subseries B: An Appalachian Christmas contains documents and ephemera related to the yearly celebration of "An Appalachian Christmas" hosted by the Museum as well as the Museum's "Festival of Trees." Subseries C: Events and Programs holds documents and ephemera pertaining to the Cultural Museum's events such as guests speakers, concerts, and childrens programs. Subseries D: Newsclippings and Press houses articles written about the Museum throughout its seventeen year history. Also included are articles about the regional history of western North Carolina which addressed topics covered by the Museum's exhibits. Subseries E: Ephemera contains brochures,Cultural Museum letterhead, and some general Appalachian State ephemera from within the Museum's files. Subseries F: Inventories includes inventories taken of the Museum's artifact collection. These inventories are primarily those used in the Museum dispersal process, 2011-2012.

Series Description

Series V: Audiovisual is divided into nine subseries. Subseries A: Black and White Photographs includes photographs of the Cultural Museum as well as historical photographs from within the western North Carolina region. Subseries B: Color Photographs, Slides, and Negatives houses photographs and negatives of the Museum, historic photographs, and special events. Also included are slides including those used in the Museum's opening show. Subseries C: Audiocassettes contains music tracks from the Cultural Museum, music by Lamar Stringfield, music by regional artists, tapings of Museum programs, and Land of Oz recordings. Subseries D: Compact Discs and Digital Video Discs holds digital media primarily pertaining to the Cultural Museum's programs, artifacts, and construction. Subseries E: Floppy Discs includes discs found within the Museum's records. Suberies F: Reel-to-Reels contains audio of the Museum's opening show, Museum programs, music, and sound effects. Reel-to-Reel video included vintage footage of Blowing Rock Ski Lodge and Downtown Boone as well as a Cratis Williams lecture and a reel from the Appalachian Oral History Project. Music, sound effects, and video from the Land of Oz theme park are also included in this subseries. Subseries G: Videocassettes houses footage and documentaries related to Cultural Museum exhibits, programs, and publicity. Subseries H: Mixed Media contains a tapes with notes, laserdiscs, fuji video, film strips, undeveloped film, and one unlabeled DV cassette. Highlights of this subseries are Jack Tales by the Hicks family and Dr. E. E. Garbee. Subserie I: Artifacts includes various items used in the Cultural Museum's exhibits as well as paintings, historic books, ledgers, drama scripts, banners, historic newspapers [including clippings of ballads and poems], a framed weaving draft, music scores by Lamar Stringfield, an Ashe County Oral History, and historic currency.
