This is a small collection of correspondence and newspaper clippings about Mrs. Pearl Beasley.

Biographical/Historical Note

Pearl & businessman husband John W. Beasley purchased Pilot Mountain in an auction in March 1944 for $14,500 from the W.L. Spoon estate. In 1950, they opened a swimming pool and dance pavilion there, and many visitors visited and picnicked on the knob yearly.

In the early 1960's, a group of local people raised money to match federal grants to purchase the mountain, and the knob's owner, Pearl Beasley, agreed to sell it for $682,500. In 1968 the state of North Carolina purchased Pilot Mountain and developed the 14th state park. Under the state's ownership, the park has grown by the addition of 1,400 acres in 1970, giving the park a total of 3,651 acres. Pilot Mountain is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the state of North Carolina.
