Abstract:

This is a collection of certificates from Charlestown, West Virginia, Graded School and Male Academy. The graded school certificate is blank. The two Certificates of Distinction from the Male Academy are to George W. Rouse, dated 1890-91. The Certificate of Proficiency is to Frank Rouss, dated 1893-94.

Biographical/Historical Note

The private Charlestown Male Academy in Charlestown, West Virginia was opened in 1795. In the school year 1886-87, it boasted of two instructors and forty-three pupils, studying English, mathematics, ancient and modern languages, mental and physical science, and bookkeeping. At the time of two of the certificates, the principal was Edmund R. Taylor. In 1894, the principal was R.K. Meade.

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of one blank Grade Certificate from the Charlestown Graded School, two Certificates of Distinction to George W. Rouse from the Charlestown Male Academy in 1891, and one Certificate of Proficiency to Frank Rouss from the Charlestown Male Academy in 1894.

Acquisitions Information

The origin of the graded school certificate is unknown. The Charlestown Male Academy certificates were purchased from Bookworm & Silverfish in 2013. Accession numbers AC.2001.005 and AC.2001.009
