Biographical/Historical Note

Could find no information on Rev. Wipler. Shepherdstown is the oldest town in West Virginia, having been officially chartered in 1862. The Battle of Shepherdstown occurred about 1 mile downstream from the town. This ledger account began on December 31, 1862, so no doubt the congregation did not have much to offer the preacher, thus paying him with food, dry goods, corn for his chickens, and butter for his bread. He entered the person's/family's name beside each donation.

Scope and Contents

This ledger was dated in the beginning December 31, 1862. The first page is Rev. Wipler's account with Fuhman D. Crouse, of his purchases. After that are his entries of "Account of presents received from the Shepherdstown congregation", beginning April 1863 with a cord of wood. Entries of ham, a crock of lard or butter, 1 chicken, and all sorts of food items were made each month.

The last entry is the amount "collected Sept. 6th at communion in ___ $10.03". "Shepherdstown Christmas-$12.14, deduct $5.00, Shep Easter-$10.81"
