Biographical/Historical Note

Testament of December 10, 1803 by Bennett Cook, former Constable of Wood County, Virginia regarding his receiving a document from Colonel Hugh Phelps of Wood County, Virginia on June 1802 regarding a suit between Phelps and the property of William Skinner and a bale of bear skins.

Bennett Cook was born Oct. 3, 1776 in Massachusetts and died in October 1845. He was married to Hannah James in 1806.

Scope and Contents

This is a single sheet of tattered, fragile paper on which Bennett Cook has written his testimony in a lawsuit over a bale of bear skins between Hugh Phelps and William Skinner. Skinner asked a question of Cook, "Did you open the bail (sp.) of skins and count them at the time you served the first attachment?" Cook's answer was, "No I did not."

It was signed by Cook before the Justice of the Peace of Wood County, Virginia, Joseph Cook, on December 10, 1803.
