This collection of writings of Della Lee Riley Belt of Kentucky includes "Dialect as it was Spoken in some Areas of the United States", "The Sad Face Man", and "The Spirit of the Hills". Mrs. Riley signed "The Spirit" in 1975.

Biographical/Historical Note

Mrs. Della Lee Riley Belt "selected Wytheville Community College as the guardian of her work" according to the letter from President of Wytheville Community College William F. Snyder in 1984. Mrs. Belt's niece Mrs. Loel Callahan requested that a copy of the enclosed papers be sent to Appalachian State University.

Mrs. Belt's "The Spirit of the Hills" shares her remembrances of Opossum Hollow, Kentucky, using pseudonyms and a glossary of dialect terms and her family genealogy.

Della Lee Riley Belt was born 1899, Carter County, Kentucky.

Scope and Contents

Photocopies of Mrs. Belt's Appalachian Folklore documents came to Appalachian State University via Wytheville Community College at the request of Mrs. Belt's niece, Mrs. Loel Callahan in 1984. The documents are "Dialect as it was spoken in some area of the United States", "The Sad Face Man", and "The Spirit of the Hills"-written in 1975.

This collection is open for use in the Dougherty Reading Room. An appointment for research is recommended. The Dougherty Reading Room is located on the 4th floor of Belk Library in Special Collections.

Acquisitions Information

Copies of Mrs. Belt's Appalachian Folklore documents were transferred from Wytheville Community College, Wytheville, Virginia at the request of her niece, Mrs. Loel Callahan in November 1984. Accession number is AC.2001.061.
