Biographical/Historical Note

Camden Sommers was born in Clarksburg, Harrison County, West Virginia November 12, 1858. He studied law at the University of West Virginia during 1881 to 1883, practicing law in Clarksburg for several years in the counties of Lewis, Gilmer, Calhoun, Braxton, Webster and Randolph. His grandfather, Judge Gideon E. Camden was one of the largest landowners in the state, thus Sommers concentrated on the intricacies of land conveyancing.

In 1891 Mr. Sommers purchased the 'Clarksburg News', the official organ of the Democratic party in the county, and ran the newspaper for several years as editor and publisher. He then established 'The County Mail and Advertiser' in 1897, an independent Democratic paper of Clarksburg. He ran 'The County Mail' from 1897-1902.

Scope and Contents

The letter, which constitutes the entirety of this collection, speaks of some land and oil and coal rights deals to several pieces of real estate. Mr. Sommers also tells Mr. Robert M. Ramsburg of a case that "will probably come up in January and our attorney must have the evidence at once." Since Mr. Sommers owned 'The County Mail', he used its letterhead on which to type the letter, dated November 18, 1897.

It is a single-item collection.
