Guide to the Harrison Hagan Papers, circa 1830s

Summary Information

Title: Harrison Hagan Papers, circa 1830s
Collection: AC.554
Extent: 0.01 linear feet (1 folder)

The Harrison Hagan Patent Papers entail Hagan's attempt for a patent for a "new and useful machine for washing & rolling clothes" probably in early 1800s. His letter describes the machine and apparent drawings of it, submitted to the Commissioner of Patents, along with a letter from Court of Preston County, Virginia.

Creator: Hagan, Harrison

Biographical/Historical Note

Harrison Hagan is found on the internet in two capacities: a director appointed to build a road from Brandonville to the Northwestern turnpike, by the General Assembly of Virginia in 1838, and as a general store owner in Brandonville, as evidenced by store ledgers housed at Virginia Tech's Special Collections.

If the washing machine he described was the wringer-type washer, his was not patented. No record is found of his owning the patent for any machine.

Scope and Contents

The letter describing Mr. Hagan's new machine is very detailed and apparently there were drawings to go along with the document. The letter from the Preston County Court states Hagan paid "thirty dollars into the Treasury and complied with other provisions of the said act."

Neither letter is dated so it's a guess that the letters are circa 1830s.

The letters are stained and yellowed but in good condition.

There are two undated items in this collection.
