Biographical/Historical Note

Research did not reveal any solid facts on E.G. Sutherland of Hillsville, but N.P. Oglesby was appointed County Judge of Carroll County, Virginia in December 1891 by the Virginia General Assembly and was a member of the Assembly in 1908 and may have been earlier, according to his letters to E.G. Sutherland.

Scope and Contents

These papers include a receipt to E.G. Sutherland from John Wanamaker, Importer in Philadelphia dated June 17, 1897 for net and buttons, two letters to E.G. from N.P. Oglesby in December 1897 about political happenings, and three subscription receipts for E.G. to the Lynchburg News dated 1898-1900.

This collection is open for use in the Dougherty Reading Room. An appointment for research is recommended. The Dougherty Reading Room is located on the 4th floor of Belk Library in Special Collections.

Acquisitions Information

It was purchased from Bookworm and Silverfish in Fall 2001. This was accessioned as N.P. Oglesby Papers, but only two letters from Oglesby to Sutherland are included, thus they are named Sutherland Papers. Accession number is AC.2001.086.

Processed by Anita Elliott, March 2013. This collection was processed as part of a grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission. The grant funded extensive processing of the backlog within the W. L. Eury Appalachian Collection between 2012 and 2014.
