This collection consists of two original audio cassettes and the transcription of them, along with a user and an archival CD copy of the cassettes. They are entitled "Ruth Edmisten Lentz on Appalachian Training School" May 9, 1996 and "Ruth Edna Edmisten Lentz Interview" June 14, 1996. The interviews are between Ralph Lentz II and his grandmother, Ruth Edmisten Lentz.

Biographical/Historical Note

Ruth Edmisten Lentz was born in Watauga County, North Carolina in 1904. She attended grade school at Cool Springs and the Silver Lake School in Blowing Rock, North Carolina. She later attended Appalachian Training School in 1922-23, and received her teaching certificate. She taught at the Silver Lake school for one term, 1923-24. Ms. Lentz died February 12, 2002.

Ralph Lentz II authored a book, "W.R.Trivett, Appalachian Pictureman: Photographs of a Bygone Time" in 2001. He is an instructor of history at Appalachian State University, Caldwell Community College, and Lees-McRae College. A native of Watauga County, he lives in Blowing Rock, North Carolina, and also pursues interests in painting, drawing and other graphic arts.

Scope and Contents

Audio cassette #1 is entitled Ruth Edmisten Lentz Interview May 9, 1996 on Appalachian Training School. Side A is Childhood and Side B is Appalachian Training School. Audio cassette #2 is entitled Ruth Edna Edmisten Lentz Interview, June 14, 1996. Sides A & B are Family Life, Nursing. There is one copy each of the transcriptions. Ruth was 92 when the interviews took place.

Access Restrictions

The collection may be used in the Dougherty Reading Room with the following restrictions by the donor: Researchers must receive written permission from Ralph Lentz II in order to publish extractions from the material. Audio-tapes may not be duplicated until Lentz uses material for publication. Lentz retained copyright of materials.
