Biographical/Historical Note

The Northwest North Carolina Development Association was organized in 1953. Its purpose was to foster community involvement in improving the standard of living in rural communities. The founders believed that the citizens of Northwest North Carolina should have a voice in determining the kinds of development they wanted in their area. More progress could be accomplished through a combined effort of the counties and the support of the various institutions and agencies of the area and the State.

Scope and Contents

In this collection is a document asking for help in developing the direction for the Association by answering questions about needs, opportunities and suggestions about the people and area. It also explains the recognition programs of the Association. Another document is the actual 1985 entry for the Community Development Division Recognition Program for communities and/or organizations.

A multi-sectional information pamphlet about the Association is also a part of this collection. Topics discussed within are Community Development, Agriculture, Youth, Natural Resources, Family Living, and Economic Development.

This collection is open for use in the Dougherty Reading Room. An appointment for research is recommended. The Dougherty Reading Room is located on the 4th floor of Belk Library in Special Collections.
