This collection consist of a small 5x7 notice confirming that the two men listed here (W.L. Hill and Thos. Massie) heard a statement made during a speech by Jacob Yost at Massie's Mill, Virginia. Made official by Justice of the Peace of Nelson County, Virginia R.W. Massie, dated October 30, 1884.

Biographical/Historical Note

Jacob Yost (April 1, 1853 - January 25, 1933) was an American politician who represented Virginia in the United States House of Representatives from 1887–1889 and 1897-1899. Yost was an unsuccessful Republican candidate for election in 1884 to the Forty-ninth Congress. This notice concerns a statement Yost made during a speech at Massie's Mill on October 21, 1884.

Massie's Mill is an unincorporated community in Nelson County, Virginia of State Route 56, near the Tye River.

Scope and Contents

The two men listed, W.L. Hill and Thomas Massie, may have posted this notice for public notice. The text of the notice states: Massie's Mill, October 30, 1884 | We having seen a notice that is being circulated by Jacob Yost, denying having said in his speech at Massie's Mill that a decent negro was superior to a poor white man, and nailing the report as a lie, we, the undersigned do hereby certify that we were present on the 21st day of Oct. 1884, at Massie's Mill, and heard him state in his speech that a decent negro was better than poor white trash, or words to that effect. W.L. Hill and Thos. Massie | Subscribed and sworn to before me this 30th day of October 1884. R.W. Massie, J.P. Nelson County, Va.
