This collection contains materials about the Court Street United Methodist Church in Lynchburg, Virginia. A brochure describing the church's 125th year of existence (in 1986) with some of its ministers and other historical
facts is included, along with two newspaper articles and a handwritten list of churches on Court Street.

Biographical/Historical Note

From the brochure and article clippings, the founder of Court Street Church was John Early in 1851. The last service in the first building was fifty years later on June 29-30, 1901. A new larger church building was dedicated on November 23, 1902 at a cost of $80,000.

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of the 125th anniversary brochure of Court Street United Methodist Church containing its rich history and some of its pastors. Also in the collection are two newspaper clippings of 1977 and 1986 about the church, Lynchburg and their "entwined history". One other paper is included, a handwritten list, apparently of locations and names of churches on Court Street, Lynchburg, Virginia. All items are in very good condition.

This collection is open for use in the Dougherty Reading Room. An appointment for research is recommended. The Dougherty Reading Room is located on the 4th floor of Belk Library in Special Collections.
