This is a collection of papers by R.W. Baker on Lost River State Park and some correspondence on his paper's circulation to several people. It is dated 1934-1938.

Biographical/Historical Note

R.W. Baker was a foreman at the Lost River State Park in the 1930's. Lost River State Park is a state park located in Hardy County, West Virginia near the community of Mathias. The park encompasses 3,712 acres now managed by the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources. The park was formerly known as Hardy White Sulphur Springs and previous to that, Howard's Lick.

Scope and Contents

R.W. Baker, a foreman of Lost River State Park, wrote a paper on the park in 1934, Lost River State Park: A Short Historical Sketch. The correspondence from the park superintendent Thomas H. Olinger in 1937 sent the paper on its way to C.G. Davis of West Virginia. Mr. Davis sent the paper to W. I. Gernand in Arlington, Virginia where it made its way to several people. From a letter it prompted some folks to visit and enjoy the area. Mr. Baker wrote about the park in such poetic language, one can tell he thoroughly enjoyed being there and the magnificence of the Park.

This collection is open for use in the Dougherty Reading Room. An appointment for research is recommended. The Dougherty Reading Room is located on the 4th floor of Belk Library in Special Collections.
